An Abundance of BLessings....
What Is A Blessing?
What is a blessing? We are all familiar with the idea of counting our blessings, basically, mentally counting all those things that have contributed to our well-being, material abundance, or overall happiness. Most people are also familiar with the idea of a holy person actively blessing people, places, or things, but when that holy person blesses, what is he or she actually doing?
In some faith traditions, blessings are an important part of religious expression. The blessings themselves are considered to effectively increase religious fervor, free the faithful from evil, preserve or restore physical health, and obtain material and spiritual benefits. Blessed religious articles such as medals, prayer beads, etc. were important sacramentals. That is, these items, having been blessed for private use, were considered to carry the prayer of the church that they might effectively help users to obtain protection, healing, and desired answers to prayer.
Other blessings are used when people or even places are consecrated - that is, made holy or sanctified for holy purpose. When a priest blesses water, for example, it is made holy and serves to sanctify those upon whom it is sprinkled, protecting them from evil and driving it away. The prayers offered at the bedside of an ill person, asking that he be healed, are prayers of blessing just as prayers consecrating temples or blessing houses are.
Who Blesses?
From our work in our own church traditions as well as through our work with the angels, we know that blessings are not solely the province of priests and religious leaders. Everyone can ask blessing from the Creator. When we ask others to pray for our healing or other favour, that, too is a blessing.
The Angel Ladies have often been asked for blessings of one kind or another - blessing homes, business places, classrooms and even cars. We have been happy to oblige, occasionally going out to physically bless places, sometimes joining people by telephone or email, always by our prayers of blessing.
Blessing and prayer are works of energy. When we bless, as when we pray, we send the energy of our intention coupled with the energy of Divine Love. The more energy is directed toward our intention, the more quickly we see the effects of our blessing.
We increase the energy of our prayers and blessings in dozens of ways
Uniting our intention to others' is perhaps the most common. It is natural for us to say, "I am worried about something; please pray that the situation works out well." When many people pray, the energy is multiplied exponentially as each person joins her energy to the energies of the others.
We increase energy by using particular forms of blessing and prayer. Words carry their own energies, and by using words and forms that are strong energetically, we increase the power of our efforts.
Using blessed items also increases the energetic impact of our actions. Traditionally, water, salt, fire, bread and oil have been consecrated for use in prayer and blessing. When we use them with intention, we harness the power of longstanding belief and ritual to lend force to our words.
